Can I sell equipment purchased through the NDIS?
We look at whether you can onsell equipment purchased with your NDIS funding once you are finished with it.
Overview of the NDIS
Launched by the Australian Federal Government back in 2013. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a fund to help Australians who have permanent and significant disabilities receive the support they need. Australians under the age of 65, who have intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disabilities are able to apply for NDIS funding.
What Does the NDIS fund?
Aside from paying for disability support and services to help people with disabilities reach their goals, the NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports to help those live a full and independent life. The type of support is based on the participant’s unique needs and designed specifically to aid them to partake in everyday activities. As such, the NDIS funds those who need aids and equipment, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or assistive technology.
What is Assistive Technology?
People use a variety of equipment, technology and devices every day to make their lives a little easier. When we talk about Assistive Technology (AT), we’re referring to equipment, technology and devices used to help you do the things that are more difficult for a person because of their disability. This includes numerous things like non-slip mats, special cutlery, power-adjustable beds and even apps to help those with speech impairments.
What Assistive Technology Does NDIS fund?
When looking to claim NDIS funding for AT, there are a few key factors to consider. Firstly, the AT needs to relate to your disability. It should aid you with different activities or help reduce fatigue or the need for human assistance. AT must also help you pursue your goals. The NDIS will be looking at your disability’s specific barrier that prevents you from pursuing your goal and seeing how AT will address your support needs.
What can I do with equipment funded by NDIS when I no longer need it?
