One hand plate

This product enables people with limited mobility to eat independently with only one hand. 

The team from Frau Kettner utilised the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to develop an innovative product for people with physical and mobility disabilities.

Industrial designer Marie Ruddeck and her cofounder, Marcel Dittrich, tested and released prototypes of their innovative product and then put their vision in the hands of grassroots internet investors via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. 

What is it?

Onehandplate is a daily living aid or a "one-hand plate" designed to help people cut and eat their food independently with only one hand. It is made from durable melamine and is food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and BPA-free. It has smart adaptive features, including a sloped surface and high edge to help collect and channel small pieces of food (like peas and corn kernels) and sauces, as well as a series of cylindrical pegs strategically placed to allow users to wedge in place and cut all types of food, from proteins, fruit, and vegetables to bread and other baked goods.  

Who benefits?

Onehandplate empowers people with disabilities by assisting them to cut and eat their food independently. Anyone with limited mobility or upper-limb differences may benefit from using this daily living aid. Amputees, people with cerebral palsy, Erb’s palsy, Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, arthritis and osteoarthritis, the elderly and people with many other conditions could benefit from this innovative product.

Occupational therapists can recommend a Onehandplate as part of an NDIS plan when it meets the reasonable and necessary criteria and is linked to the participant’s disability‑related functional needs.
